The Future of CoalNew study released by MIT, The Future of Coal in a Carbon-Constrained World, "evaluates the technologies and costs associated with the generation of electricity from coal along with those associated with the capture and sequestration of the carbon dioxide produced coal-based power generation". This interdisciplinary MIT faculty group study basically takes the stance that electricity demand in the world is growing, which will require "increases in all generation options (renewables, coal, and nuclear)." Coal being one of the most abundant sources of fossil fuels, will certainly be a major contributer to our power generation. So the trick is to manage/sequester all the nasty carbon dioxide that results from combustion. 'This study, addressed to government, industry and academic leaders, discusses the interrelated technical, economic, environmental and political challenges facing increased coal-based power generation while managing carbon dioxide emmissions from this sector."READ the report.
