Pratt Institute's 3rd Annual Green Week Celebration
March 30- April 4, 2009
Pratt's annual Green Week celebration continues to expand. This year's program includes gallery exhibits, competitions, talks, films, hands-on activities, and much, much more. Whether you're interested in sustainable materials, transportation options, environmental justice, local environmental actions, or global solutions for sustainability... Green Week 2009 has something for everyone.
All Green Week Events are open to the public and FREE! Events take place in a variety of locations across the Brooklyn campus, including Pratt Studios/Terian Design Center, Higgins Hall, the ARC and (weather permitting) tents on the main campus lawn.
Our goal is to spread the word of sustainable living and raise awareness of all the initiatives taking place at Pratt Institute and throughout the Pratt Community. Please join us!
Exhibitions
- Sustainable Architecture/ Urban Planning Exhibition
Higgins Hall in "the Pit" and Lobby areas, 9am – 5pm daily
A display of selected student projects which show the role of sustainability in Architecture and Urban Planning.
- Interior Design Studio Exhibit
Halls and Lobby of Interior Design Department, 9am-5pm daily
A display of selected student projects, models and photos designed around sustainable materials and technology.
- Films and Displays of Sustainable Materials
Materials Library on the 1st Floor of Pratt Studios, 12pm-4pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Films will be screened in the materials library during Green Week including: TED Talks: Janine Benyus: 12 Sustainable Design Ideas from Nature, TED Talks: William McDonough: The Wisdom of designing Cradle to Cradle, Materials Connexion: Still Images of Sustainable Materials

A display of selected student projects which focus on Sustainability in Exhibition Design.
- "For the Birds" Installation
Trees adjacent to the Juliana Curran Terian Design Center and Pantas Dormitory
Artists and designers contribute many layers of interpretive and metaphorical content to our
daily functional environment. Several Foundation 3D classes explore forms for providing food
and shelter for migrating birds, while , with a nod to Brancusi and Calatrava, they simultaneously expand the goal of these functional objects to embrace an aesthetic of flight.
The birdhouses in the trees directly in front of Pantas: Students chose the structural nature of Mondrian's paintings as the design theme for these projects.

DOT Free Bicycle Helmet Giveaway

For the second year in a row the New York City Department of Transportation has generously offered to give away free bicycle helmets. Each helmet will be properly fitted for the individual, therefore anyone wishing to receive a helmet must be present. Additionally, to avoid liability issues, each person receiving a helmet must sign a waiver; if you are under 18 years old on the day of the fitting, your waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian.
Solar Punch, a solar-powered musical performance

Solar Punch is a solar-powered band from New York that just returned from a very exciting tour of India as a part of the Indian Youth Climate Network. Their music is not only entertaining, but it is also educational. "Solar punch uses solar energy and music to help spread positive ideas about renewable energy, environmental awareness and climate action."
Audubon Society and FXFowle: The Creation of a L.E.E.D. Platinum Interior

The design team from the architectural firm of FXFowle with Ken Hamilton, V.P. of Property & Facilities Management for Audubon, will present and discuss the planning and sustainable attributes of the Audubon’s now headquarters office, 225 Varick Street, in Hudson Square. "We will be hoeing, digging, raking and laying-out the plot's design for this
year's garden. Last year we planted a sunflower patch, this year the garden will be

Heidi Hutner, Associate Professor at SUNY Stony Brook, will speak about ecofeminism, or the conjunction of ecology and feminism, in literature, film and culture. She defines ecofeminism as a theory, and outlines its history and principles, exploring how ecofeminist theory functions in relationship to contemporary women's literature, film, and environmental activism.

Design Green Now Panel Discussion

Design Green Now started in April of 2008 as a series of FREE panel discussions exploring the integration of innovative tools in the greening of consumer products. These sessions inspire and empower emerging designers to build a sustainable future NOW!
Panelists have included rock star designers from top consultancies like Frog, Smart Design and Fuse Project along side leading green producers like the sportswear company Nau. They share their current green projects, the challenges they face and the tools they use for successful sustainable design. The discussions highlight sustainable materials, product life cycles and social impact.

Organized as a sort of Green Club Day, this event is intended to make students aware of the activities that are already occurring on campus. The intention is to build upon the green and sustainable foundations that are already being laid within the student body and create a desire in students to participate in these practices and initiatives. Participants will include: SGA, Envirolution, Eco-Reps, Res-Life (RA initiatives), and Greek Life.

The focus on sustainable transportation continues Thursday, 7-9pm in the Pie Shop. NYPIRG, a statewide student advocacy organization, will be joined by StreetsFilms, Transportation Alternatives and The Pratt Center for a Green Transportation Forum focused on the environmental impacts of transportation, bike-friendly boroughs and how we can bring a bike repair shop to campus.

This year, the Pratt Institute - America Reads/Counts program will – Go Green. 75 Pratt college tutors will read, count and display the books they authored on trees and gardens to 500 – 800 local 4- 12 year olds and their parents at their 2nd annual Costumed Read Out Performance.

Pratt students will be hosting local merchants, a goods swap and art work on our campus quad. Information will be provided on sustainable activities, events, products, and services to the neighborhood children and their parents.

Just because you no longer need something does not mean that its lifecycle has to end! Drop off your unwanted, usable items and perhaps someone else can find a use for them; similarly, perhaps you will find something that is useful to you. This event is a free exchange of goods and services. Play an instrument? Come out and offer your entertainment services while also getting in a good practice session.

This market will consist of vendors representing restaurants, farms, and other food suppliers that are local, sustainable, and green. By bringing these options right to the campus, we aim to provide healthier choices for the Pratt community. Items will be for sample and for sale at the vendors' discretion. Vendors include Red Jacket Orchards, Siggi's Skyr, Chewonthis.org, SuperVegan, Bobolink Farms Dairy, the Nutbox, and Rick's Picks.
IACSC: In Pratt's Backyard: Food Justice and Community Organizing

The Initiative for Arts, Community, and Social Change is sponsoring a showcase on urban agriculture and community food initiatives in our local communities of Brooklyn. Produced by Morgan Spurlock and directed by Rob VanAlkemade, this docu-comedy follows the trials and triumphs of Reverend Billy and the Choir across the country as they preach and sing to help holiday-abused Americans find a new Christmas without products.
This film has played throughout the US, bringing Fair Trade activists and Evangelical Christians together in darkened movie theaters, emerging with new tools to BUY LESS and GIVE MORE!

An all day workshop on the
concept and methodology of Biomimicry -- a process for problem solving
inspired by nature. Sponsored by Pratt¹s Center for Sustainable Design and Studies, the workshop
is developed and led by Professors Rebecca Welz (Industrial Design), Douglas
Wirls (Foundation Arts) and Jenny Lee (Fine Arts).
This workshop is designed to introduce faculty from a variety of departments at Pratt to biomimicry or bio-inspiration, and to provide a methodology of working which may be applicable to their practice and teaching.
