For the second year in a row the New York City Department of Transportation is working with NYPIRG and Envirolution to give away free bicycle helmets. Each helmet will be properly fitted for the individual, therefore anyone wishing to receive a helmet must be present. Additionally, to avoid liability issues, each person receiving a helmet must sign a waiver; if you are under 18 years old on the day of the fitting, your waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian. There will also be a Green Film Screening, a treasure hunt game at the Get to Know Your Local Sustainable Community Table.
Researching Sustainability: Finding and Using Reliable Resources

Planning for a sustainable future requires using information from many disciplines. In order to devise effective strategies for a sustainable future we must have accurate information. How can we find reliable information on sustainability? This is a how-to presentation highlighting reliable online resources as well as library materials about sustainability. Refreshments will be served.
Green Depot Presentation: Designing with Sustainable Materials

Music Event: Flying Duo

Frank Marino, internationally recognized musician and teacher, will perform on percussion and keyboard . Tiokasin Ghosthorse, host of "First Voices Indigenous Radio on WBAI, is a master on his Lakota flute. Together they will resonate with songbird field recordings to inspire feeder feasting by migratory and resident birds. Student musicians and vocalists will be invited to join in a closing finale together, inspiring the human audience to passionate action: that of species preservation. This Event will be broadcast live on Pratt.edu/Radio
Urban Green Council and Seminar: Being Green in the Concrete Jungle

The Urban Green Council is the New York Chapter of the US Green Building Council, and serves to educate and advocate to advance sustainability in buildings. They will present on the Green Codes Task Force’s proposals for NYC’s building codes, on how LEED 2009 is tougher and better than past versions, and on the opportunities for young building professionals to develop a career through sustainable practice. NYPIRG Presents: Josh Fox

Brooklyn-based filmmaker Josh Fox will screen clips of his work. His film GASLAND was selected winner of the Special Jury Prize for Documentary in the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. GASLAND is a cross country exploration of the dangers of a type of natural gas drilling, hydraulic fracturing, which causes the spread of illness, toxic tap water, raging well fires, and ruined land. During the screening, he will answer questions from the audience about both the film making process and the issue of hydraulic fracturing, which has been proposed in the area that supplies 90% of the drinking water for New York City. This event is only open to the Pratt community.

LEAP Panel Discussion; Natural Gas Drilling in NYC's Watershed: The Next Clean Green Fuel orA Massive Threat to Your Health?

NYC including Bloomberg and the Department of Environmental Protection have taken a stand against natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale region part of which is located in NYC's Watershed, urging Albany to do the same. A panel of professionals, activists, concerned citizens and community groups, including members from Shaleshock, Catskill Citizens for Safe Energy and the Office of Environmental Coordination will discuss the facts and risks inherent to natural gas drilling and explain how it would effect NYC city citizens- in terms of health, safety, water quality and resulting future economic obligations. This event will work in conjunction with the NYPIRG event on April 1st.
