Pratt's annual Green Week celebration continues to expand. This year's program includes gallery exhibits, competitions, talks, films, hands-on activities, and much, much more. Whether you're interested in sustainable materials, transportation options, environmental justice, local environmental actions, or global solutions for sustainability... Green Week 2008 has something for everyone.
All Green Week Events are open to the public and FREE! Events take place in a variety of locations across the Brooklyn campus, including Pratt Studios/Terian Design Center, Higgins Hall, the ARC and (weather permitting) tents on the main campus lawn.
Our goal is to spread the word of sustainable living and raise awareness of all the initiatives taking place at Pratt Institute and throughout the Pratt Community. Please join us!
Green Week Keynote Address: Dr. Paul Polak
This year's keynote address will be given by Dr. Paul Polak, author of the acclaimed book Out of Poverty and founder of International Development Enterprises (IDE), which designs practical solutions to attack poverty at its roots. He has worked with thousands of farmers in Bangladesh, India, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe to help design and produce low-cost, income-generating products that have already moved 17 million people out of poverty. His products include a $25 treadle pump and small farm drip-irrigation systems priced as low as $3 which helped increase poor farmers' net income by $288 million annually. IDE received a $14 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation in 2006, and in 2004 it received Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in the social responsibility category. His show "Design for the other 90%" was last summer's exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design. In his keynote address, Dr. Polak will discuss the over 800 million people in the world living on less than a dollar a day, and how to design products which enable them to elevate their economic status. Dr. Polak will be introduced by Jacqui Khiu of the Design 21 social design network. Higgins Hall Auditorium, 6pm Thursday, March 27th.

An informal research and construction project, in teams, to invite songbirds to our campus for Green Week. Materials are recycled, or soon to be utilized for subsequent projects. Select examples of feeders convey seeds as well as the formal expression of flight and will be suspended in trees, accompanied by related Haikus. Together, they reach for a sense of wonder, passion, and the preservation of nature in our academic midst. The project hopes to spearhead a small plot on campus being identified and maintained as a World Wildlife Site; According to the Audubon society, the 40-year population decline of 20 species of the most familiar birds in America is 68 percent.

Living in Balance: Drawing from Native American Wisdom for Sustainability
with a Thanksgiving Address to the Earth.
12:30 pm – 1:50pm
Located outside near main Green Week tents (rain location: Engineering 108)
Led by Joelle Danant, this activity will draw from Native American wisdom and recognize that true evolution, well-being and sustainability involve the conscious appreciation of the vital interconnectedness of all of life's creations, especially the Earth, on an energetic, intelligent level, as well as the physical level. Through a Native American ceremony of Thanksgiving, we will focus on sending love, appreciation and gratitude (the most primal and free types of energy) to the earth, for all that the Earth has ever given to humans, and to all living things. The exercise of consciously giving thanks, love and appreciation to the earth and nature, as a community, is part of what restores balance and contributes to sustainability in the community and the world. We will also discuss the essential elements that, according to Native American Wisdom, make up a well balanced life, such as the restorative power for self and the earth, to slow down and honor our true needs — which leads to a deeper quality of beingness and connectedness to all of life.
